X-men Origins: Wolverine
Rating: 3 out of 5

I’m going to try my best not to compare Wolverine the movie and Wolverine the comic book character too much during this review.  I feel the movie should have been more connected to the comic book character; there are just way too many flaws in the storytelling and events seen in this movie.  For instance, the timeline in which the events are supposed to be taking place during the movie do not add up with previous X-men titles and the comic.  The inclusion of Gambit, my personal favorite X-men, was appreciated, but completely wrong.  However the inclusion of a young Cyclops is not appreciated, it just makes no sense whatsoever.  Why did they feel that they had to include him?  Did it make for a better story?  The truth is that it could have been any other character with similar powers and it would have been a better plotline.

The comic book aside, this is actually a fun and entertaining movie.  I know most of you fan boys can’t look past the comic book plot-holes, but if you knew nothing about the comic – you will probably really enjoy this movie.

Hugh Jackman reprises his most popular role, a role that made him who he is today – and he couldn’t have been better.  Jackman is Wolverine, very much like Heath Ledger is The Joker and no one else can take that role from him… no one can ever replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.  Although he is too tall to play the ill-tempered regenerating mutant, he is a perfect match with what you would expect to see from this well-loved comic book hero.

The action and special effects are amazing, the perfect mix to make a fun action packed summer blockbuster.  I wasn’t a fan of the way they made his adamantium claws look.  I understand they made them look new and unused, but they seemed incredibly fake because of the extra shine.  They had a cartoon quality to them, very much like something out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Tyler Mane did an amazing job in the very first X-men movie in 2000, he looked and acted exactly like the Sabretooth from the comics – but Liev Schreiber was brought in this time around to portray the clawed villain.  It was actually nice to see such an amazing actor play such a complex character – and although he didn’t have the look from the comics, he definitely pulled off his persona and the characteristics of Sabretooth.  Taylor Kitsch takes on the role as my favorite X-men, Gambit.  A role that was originally offered to Josh Holloway from LOST, but since Josh felt that Gambit was too similar to his character on LOST the role went to Taylor.  It would have been nice to see Josh Holloway as Gambit, but Taylor gave Gambit the screen presence that he deserves.  The only bad thing with including Gambit in this movie is that fact that it will be harder to include him later in any other X-men movie – since the timeline is completely wrong with what is supposed to happen in the comics.  But will that stop them from messing with the timeline again?  I don’t think so.

Looking past the major differences and flaws between the events/characters in this movie and the comics – it is still an enjoyable movie with a dream cast.
