Christopher Nolan
and his incredible look behind Batman’s cape ‘n cowl has made it hard for any other comic book movie to be released
after last years The Dark Knight; each and every one will be scrutinized and compared to Gotham City’s caped crusader
– Watchmen was no different. While searching online I found very similar topics being discussed on the bulletin
boards; whether it was on the Dark Knight board or Watchmen itself – people were comparing the two and either choosing
one as the best comic book movie they’ve ever seen. Although I feel that Watchmen was far from being the best
when it comes to the two, but in all honesty I don’t see how you can even compare the two.
Watchmen follows
a group of superheroes in an alternate universe where Nixon is still president in the 80’s and the reality we know today
doesn’t exist. First, I must mention that the casting was beautifully done; nearly each and every actor performed
at their highest level – whether it was a main character or an extra in the background – my only gripe concerning
the cast was the overly imagined interpretation of Richard Nixon, his look and acting would been more fitting in a Dick Tracy
movie – the other cast member that should have seen less camera time was the flopping blue appendage that made one too
many appearances; I’m surprised that it didn’t get its own listing on IMDB.com for amount of screen time it received.
But looking past the awkwardly naked Dr. Manhattan and the over-acting of Richard Nixon, each character seemed to have a role
in the movie besides just being thrown into the film as filler.
The music they chose for the film is another story;
while some come across as being a genius choice for that particular scene (for example: the love scene) – others
just seemed odd and unfitting to the movie.
The story is pretty strong; which can also be a rarity when it comes
to comic book movies – we’re often given an action based superhero film with little or no plot – Watchmen
features a moderately believable plot with very few plot holes that will keep most people interested the entire film. I
say “most people” because if you’re going into it expecting an action-packed senseless film; well, you will
come out of it very disappointed. Sure, it does feature a few great action sequences, but this is not your typical
comic book movie – and definitely not one to show your kids no matter if they have seen The Dark Knight a hundred times.
The special features that are included on the Blu-Ray itself are really weak; only consisting of a few documentaries
discussing real world superheroes and another one discussing the creation of the graphic novel. Although, for those
of you that have a Blu-Ray player featuring BD-Live you will have access to a lot more features. Inside the Blu-Ray
there is a coupon for ten dollars off the Watchmen Ultimate Collector’s Edition that is coming this December; I recommend
you serious fans of the film wait until then to purchase a Blu-Ray version of the film – it will feature a lot more
special features.
I know little about the original graphic novel so I don’t know the full story – to
me I feel they could have added a few more scenes to explain the story in depth for those of us that haven’t read the
original stories. For instance, near the end of the film they introduce a foreign animal that they give no explanation
to; was it genetically enhanced? Is it an alien? We may never know.
I may have been a new fan, but
I was still able to enjoy myself while watching the Watchmen.
That’s why we give it 4 flopping blue balls
out of 5.
