Comic
book movies have over-populated this world for the past few years, each year it seems as though we get an overabundance of
testosterone filled comic book movies. This year is no different, we have seen Thor, Green Lantern and
Captain America – and I completely feel that the first comic book movie released in the year has the upper hand in the
box office. That being said, Thor was released first in the box office (unless
you count Green Hornet, which I don’t) – and I truly feel it was the best superhero movie of the year.
As soon as the
film starts, you see glorious visuals as they show us the mythical realm of Asgard. Most of the visuals
were so real that I couldn’t tell which was real and which was green-screen. The fast paced, action
packed first fifteen minutes of the film were fantastic – this is exactly what I want to see from my comic book movies.
The characters seen in Asgard were mesmerizing and compelling – unfortunately it isn’t the same case for
the characters found on Earth later in the movie. Each and every character/actor seen in Asgard was remarkable
– from Loki to The Warriors Three – each character had an appealing quality to them that I loved.
Chris Hemsworth IS the star of this movie - I have seen Chris in movies before, but he never truly stuck out until
now. He is perfect as Thor.
As I stated before, I wasn’t too fond of the characters found on Earth.
Sure, they were all entertaining enough, but when comparing them to Loki, Sif, Fandral, Volstagg and Hogun –
their performances fell short and weren’t as entertaining to watch. Oscar winner, Natalie Portman
plays Jane Foster – the love interest in the movie. Natalie’s performance was that of any other
high profile Oscar winning actor in a comic book movie – I just don’t
feel they understand that comic book movies can be serious too – and you can win an Oscar from such performances.
I don’t think Natalie gave 100% in her performance – it was still good enough, but it could have been better.
The Bottom Line:
A great movie with incredible action sequences and a spot on performance by Chris Hemsworth. I would have
liked more scenes on Asgard instead of Earth, but the Earth scenes held some great scenes featuring Thor’s adaptation
to being on Earth. This is definitely a must see if you are a comic book fan. And the
great thing is that you don’t need to be a fan of Thor in itself, I knew a lot of people who walked into the movie knowing
nothing and still enjoyed themselves.
