Astonishing X-men: Dangerous
Rating: 3.2 out of 5

From the mastermind behind “Firefly” and Serenity (Joss Whedon) and award-winning artist John Cassaday comes Astonishing X-men: Dangerous.  Astonishing X-men: Dangerous follows the extremely popular “Dangerous” storyline from the comics itself.  Will it live up to expectations?  Or will X-men fans be disappointed?

The tragic death of a student reveals some deep dark secrets behind the walls of the academy (Xavier’s Institute).  As Wolverine, Cyclops, Beast and the rest of the X-men fight for their lives – they learn they’ve been deceived by one of their own!

I’m a huge fan of Joss Whedon’s work, from “Firefly” to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”… hell… he even wrote the screenplay for the original Tory Story.  That being said, I will watch just about anything he lays his hands on.  (and that definitely goes for the upcoming Avengers movie!)  Whedon’s writing along with the stunning visuals of Cassaday’s drawings are truly a force to be reckoned with.  It truly gives it the comic book / graphic novel look that it needed.  Fans of the long running comic book series will not be let down by the change of media – from comic book to video.  The story is still there, and it’s told remarkably well through the eyes of these two gentlemen.

There is only one drawback to this animated set… I wasn’t a huge fan of the animation itself.  True, the art is truly breathtaking… but the animation was choppy and… dare I say it… cheap looking.  Although it does give it some of the comic book look and feel, I would much rather see some standard animation than mediocre computer animation.  John Cassaday’s work is incredible, but it could have been a lot better if the animation was smoother and flowed naturally between scenes.

But looking beyond my distaste for the animation, this is a solid release.  The storyline is gripping and compelling.  The art is wonderful.  I do recommend it to any fan of the series.
