Chimpanzee
is a documentary that I truly wanted to see in the theaters. I was hooked from the very first trailer that I
saw earlier this year. And I was not disappointed with what I saw.
The entire documentary follows “Oscar”, a young and playful chimpanzee that will steal your heart from the moment
you see him. It shows you what trials and tribulations Oscar and his family go through deep in the heart of the
Congo. “Chimpanzee” comes from Disneynature, the same studio that
brought us “Earth”, “African Cats” and “Oceans” --- and it is without a doubt as good
as the documentaries that came before it.
I know this documentary is mainly about little Oscar and the hardship he had as a young and adventurous chimpanzee, but you
can’t help but get sidetracked while watching it. There are so many stunning visuals featured in this movie.
The camera work is truly spectacular – from following a wild chimp family through the jungles, to speeding up
the camera to show us a growing plant – it the best description of eye-candy that I have seen in a while in a documentary.
The purpose of most good documentaries
is to teach and inform – to show you something that you may not have known about a certain subject. And
“Chimpanzee” is no different. Sure, you may think you know everything there is about the cute (but
deadly) ape, but this documentary shows us another side of them – and that they’re not too different from all
of us. Not only will you see the violent and sinister side of the chimp, but also the compassionate side.
And it’s all put together in a highly entertaining documentary that is fun for all ages.
The Blu-ray release is also packed with special features: “On Location:
The Making of…”, Behind the Scenes, and “Rise” a new music video featuring the McClain Sisters (From
Disney Channel’s ‘A.N.T. Farm’). The “making of” featurette is just as informative
as the documentary itself.
I honestly
don’t know much more to say about Chimpanzee. It is fun, informative, and a great new addition to my Blu-ray
collection.
