Can you tell me a little bit about your character on Sanctuary?
Yeah, I play Kate Freelander. She’s kind of this
very sarcastic tough kind of girl who got involved in season two, and it took a while for the group to really trust Kate –
but eventually they do at the end of the season. Season three is a lot about her tearing down the walls
that she has had up her entire life – and really showing the person she really is. She’s a
pretty tough, smart-ass kind of girl who beats up boys.
Can you relate to your character at all?
I joke by saying that she’s my alter ego; she’s the complete opposite of who I truly am.
But I think that because she’s the complete opposite – it’s easy to sort of relate to her because
she’s, in a lot of ways, like the way I wish I could be sometimes.
What did they tell you about your character when you first signed on for the role?
They basically just told me that she was a freelance operative, so she didn’t
really work for the good guys or the bad guys. And because of that, at the beginning of season two, she
is actually working for the bad guys… not because she had any particular stakes in it… it’s just because
that’s where the money was coming from. She changed a lot in season two, and I think it was just
– they knew where they wanted to start her, and they saw where I was taking her… and I think by the end of it
more of my personality came through to the character.
Yeah, obviously your character has changed so much over the two seasons; can we expect more changes
in the third season?
Yeah, I definitely think so.
Perhaps not as drastic because in season two you don’t really know what Kate is… or where she’s
been or how she feels about anything, and by the end of it you could tell that her loyalty are quite strong. Whereas
in season three, I think she just becomes more human. She really believes these people are her family,
and she’ll do anything for them. So I think just the connections in the relationships between her
and the different people in the Sanctuary are just stronger, and the bonds are a little richer.
What was it like for you coming into an already popular television
show a season behind everyone else? Since the show already had a strong fan base.
It was exciting for sure. But there was definitely a lot
of pressure; I knew that they all had a couple of years to develop the characters… to really sink their teeth into
who they were and who the characters were… and the relationships between them. So, I felt like I
had to catch up. One episode after another I sort of figured things out between who Kate is and what the
relationships are… that she’s building. It was really exciting, and everybody was really really
great as well… [laughs] with the fact that I was coming on late. They tried to make me feel as home
as possible. I was very very lucky.
Do you get recognized a lot when you go out as Kate from Sanctuary?
[laughs] I have actually. There’s not a whole lot of that going on in Canada,
I think… it’s really not a big deal, but it still does happen. It actually kind of surprised
me, I was downtown one day and there was this lady and her daughter and they said “We’ve been following you for
like a block now…” [laughs] I just started laughing, it was so funny that they were following me.
They were very sweet.
Was that your first
experience of someone recognizing you?
No, it wasn’t.
I did some local shows before where people have recognized me, but it really feels good knowing that a lot of people
watch Sanctuary… just because it’s so much bigger and the character is so different from me that I get
a kick out of the fact – because if you see me in real life I’m nothing like that. [laughs]
It’s kind of fun.
So, what can you tell us about some of the
upcoming episodes in this season?
As you’ve probably already
seen the last five episodes have been pretty incredible, and I think they just continue to be like that. It’s
a very ambitious season for sure – in writing as well as in the directing. We have a couple of new
directors; one of them is Andy Mikita, and he worked a lot on Stargate Universe. So having him
on board is a real treat. And just the storylines, there’s a pretty amazing storyline that has already
started… as you saw in the second episode of the season where you see the holographic world that comes up and pops
up around them. So we go a little bit more into that, and it brings about some amazing new characters.
And it brings the characters in a direction you wouldn’t expect them to go.
I read that you have a lot of different talents and loves that you
enjoy doing besides acting; you also write and you’re involved in art and producing. Can you ever
see yourself letting go of acting to pursue one of these instead?
No, I think acting has always been a huge love of mine, and always will be. I would love to do other
things as well, but if I can just balance it and do acting while I’m writing or making films…painting or whatever.
Then I’d be very happy.
Not too long ago you had a smaller role in Watchmen, what was that experience like?
It was great, a lot of big Hollywood films are so huge – there are so many people involved, and
it was very exciting to be on a film like that and to be working with such a great director. Because my
role was so small in comparison to a lot of the other roles – you only get a little window of what the whole film is
about. So it’s exciting to see it at the end; whether it is a film like that or 2012…
it’s exciting to see the whole thing and to be able to say “Oh, I was a part of that”.
What else are you working on right now?
Sanctuary
just wrapped a couple of weeks ago; I’m also working on another webseries… much smaller in terms of budget.
But it has great Vancouver actors who are in other sci-fi shows, and I’m not sure how much I can actually say…
but once it does come out I’ll be able to talk about it. I think people will be surprised to see
who else is in it because a few of them have done sci-fi and have pretty great names… it’s pretty exciting to
be on that.
I’m also currently working
on an independent feature with a Canadian director named Bruce Sweeney; who I’ve worked with before. But
yeah, that’s pretty much it right now. Oh, actually… I do have one more thing.
I’m also working in the 2012 Earth Summit [www.earthsummit2012.org]; which is an event that is happening later on this month. It’s a great cause that I’m proud
to be a part of.
