How long have you guys been working on the album that comes out this Tuesday (July 14, 2009)?

We’ve been working on it for a while; some of the material we were doing a couple of years ago… we started writing it and then we kept on working and demoing around because we didn’t have a deal… now we have a deal and are finally able to record it.

Can you tell me the story behind the name of the band?

(laughs) Ok, the name comes from a story of our singer [Rick] and what he went through.  What happened is; he was with a couple of his friends and they were in California – he fell asleep in the back of the truck and his friends were supposed to drive to the beach, but they decided to go to Tiawana, Mexico… (laughs) and they ended up being arrested by the Mexican police.  Rick woke up while the Mexican police were grabbing him and he was able to stuff some money into his boot because they pretty much robbed them of all their money.  The place that they were robbed right in front of was a place called Adelitas; they went in thinking it was just a bar with really cheap beer – all of a sudden they were seeing these girls lining up and going off with these creepy dudes – this one girl came up to
Rick and was like: “You wanna have a good time?”  He turned around and he asked her: “Why do you do this?”  She just broke down and started telling him her life story – how she has to support all of her brothers and sisters – how her mom and dad can’t work, and how she’s been doing this since she was about twelve or thirteen.  Rick felt really bad and we ended up writing a song called “Adelitas Song”; he thought that Adelitas Way would be a perfect band name.

What’s the journey been like so far for you guys as a band?

The journey has been pretty chaotic; we started off like any other band… just a local band playing shows around town; the craziest thing is that one of our first shows we winded up meeting Brian Howes who produced Hinder and he kinda took us under his wing – we demo’d some songs for him; we got kind of a demo deal through Interscope [Records] for a while; this is going back probably about a year and a half ago.  We ended up demoing some songs for them and they ended up not being able to release an album; so we winded up having to wait for about six months pretty much… until last June to wait until the deal was up.  In the meantime we just kept writing; after that we ended up moving to L.A. and started showcasing for labels – and eventually we found the right one.  Virgin [Records] came to our showcase; they were the first label to really believe in us – so we went with them and ever since then everything has been great.

Tell me about each person in the band and how is your relationship with
all of them?

Rick [vocals] is probably like a brother to me; I’ve known him the longest… we’ve been good friends for about two years and we’ve been jamming for a while – so I’m closest with him.  Then there is Trevor,  our drummer; we met him in L.A. – we wanted to find musicians who were really dedicated and he’ll do anything – anything it takes to make things happen.  I remember there would be times where we’d be in Vegas and he’d drive up from L.A. to Vegas three times a week just to rehearse with us – he’s really dedicated and a good friend.  There’s Derek, our bass player; he’s
kind of the punching bag of the band… we like to joke around with him a lot – he’s the bass player… so. (laughs) We always find ourselves laughing with… or at him.  Then there is Keith, our other guitar player… he’s really focused – he goes on stage and always puts on a great show, he’s a great rythym guitar player… he adds a lot to the band.  We all hang out with each other, we’re all good friends – and I think that’s why we are where we are right now.

Are there any bands out there that you’d like to tour with?

On band I’m really looking forward to touring with is Shinedown; I’m hoping we get to hang out with Shinedown – we’ve met them a couple of times and we have the same management as them – they’re just awesome dudes that put on a great show – they’re starting to draw thousands and thousands of people; that’s one band I want to tour  with.  I’d also like to tour with Linkin Park or Theory of a Deadman too.  I think we might be heading out with them [Theory of a Deadman] later this year – I think we’re working on a Shinedown tour and a Theory of a Deadman tour; which would be killer.

As you’re getting more airplay on the radio; are you noticing a change in your audience or fans?

Yeah, when we play shows now we’re getting rowdier fans – “Invincible” is a high energy song that gets people moving; we’re starting to see people in the crowds singing every single word and pumping their fists which is cool.  The crowds are starting to get more into it – we’re glad we chose “Invincible” – it was the perfect first song to get the band out there.  We’re definitely noticing a difference.

How would you like the band to be known in the music industry?  What do you want to be known for?

I want the band to be known for; just being a rock ‘n roll band.  If you look at some of the great brands in history like Aerosmith – you think that they’re just a solid band with great songs – they play in front of millions of people.  I want us to be known as a good band; as a guitar player I like to play guitar solos – I want to help bring that back, I think that modern rock music kind of needs more guitar solos.  That’s what I want to be known as; a really good rock band that go on stage every night and put on a great show – I don’t want to be known as just some band that just has one hit song.

When you first went into this; did you guys set any goals?

We set goals from the very beginning; we wanted to have a song on the radio… which we have now… we always wanted the album to come out and get good feedback.  But as far as goals; we want the record to sell – we want to stay out on tour and out on the road – and work towards our second record.  To keep releasing record after record and pretty much play music for the rest of our lives.
